Watch Out: Stingrays Spotted at Clearwater Beach
Breaking: The City of Clearwater is reminding folks that doing the 'stingray shuffle' in the water is wise this time of year.

CLEARWATER, FL — It’s that time of year again when beachgoers need to be ready to bust a move by doing the “stingray shuffle.”
The City of Clearwater issued a warning Friday morning about the return of stingrays to Tampa Bay area beaches after the critters were blamed for a few minor injuries. On Wednesday, the city said 10 swimmers were treated for minor injuries after being stung.
When stingrays are present, beachgoers will see purple flags go up at lifeguard stations. Those flags signal the need for folks to do the "shuffle" while in the water.

“The warm waters of the Gulf attract more stingrays during this time of year,” the city explained in an email to media. “The best way to protect yourself is to do the ‘stingray shuffle,’ sliding your feet along the sand instead of taking big steps.”
Making shuffling moves in the water works to scare away stingrays that might be nearby, the city explained. It seems the action sends out vibrations that cause the creatures to swim away.

Clearwater Beach is manned with lifeguards year-round. The city urges swimmers to stick near lifeguard stations when they’re in the water. For those who are stung, it’s recommended to check in with a lifeguard right away for a hot pack treatment and any further medical assistance that might be required.
