Dunedin Students Shine in Regional Math Competition

Students in the  Mathcounts Club were rewarded for their longterm efforts in a regional MATHCOUNTS competition at the St. Petersburg College Seminole campus Saturday, Feb. 18.

Eleven Dunedin Highland Middle School students competed against teams from eight other area middle schools. Six students earned a chance to compete at the state competition in Orlando on March 29 and 30.

Dunedin Highland Middle school’s four-person team secured the top team position and seven students secured a spot in the top 20 positions.

First Place Team:

  • Jakub Pepas, Pooja Patel, Joseph Brooks, Jay Mithani, and alternate Tyler McDonald

  • Third place: Taha Huda
  • Fifth place: Joseph Brooks
  • Sixth place: Jay Mithani

  • 18th place: Arjun Srinivasan

 

The participants in the math club have worked hard for the past four years with a successful outcome at MATHCOUNTS as its ultimate goal. 

The regional event was sponsored by the Pinellas Chapter Florida Engineering Society, a local affiliate of the National Society of Professional Engineers.

MATHCOUNTS is an integral part of the national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) initiative, introduced by President Barack Obama in 2009, to help push American students from the middle to the top of the pack in science and math.
