Middle School Students Dominate County Math Competition

's gifted students showed their mathematical might at a countywide competition on Dec. 10.

The school won the overall school sweepstakes award, and one Dunedin middle school student

About 20 sixth- and seventh-grade students from the middle school's Center for Gifted Students participated at the Pinellas County Mighty Mu competition, a math honor society contest, at Palm Harbor University High School.Β

"The results are phenomenal," math teacher Judy Deeley wrote to Dunedin Patch.

The competition consisted of a one-hour individual test (at their grade level and curriculum) and an almost two-hour team event.

Deeley reports the following results from Dunedin Highland Middle students:

Sixth grade:

  • Samir Rajani, first place
  • Krishna Menon, second place
  • Shyam Dewan, seventh place
  • Augustus Eschler, eighth place
  • Jerome David, Shyam Dewan, Preston McDonald and Krishna Menon (Team 2), first place (out of three teams)

Algebra:

  • Jakub Pepas, first place, with the highest score achieved in Mighty Mu history
  • Tyler McDonald, second place
  • Chris Eschler, third place
  • Jacob Denning, sixth place
  • Jay Mithani, eighth place
  • Jakub Pepas, Sami Soliman, Christopher Eschler and Jay Mithani (Team 1), first place
  • Tyler McDonald, Shaila Ghanekar, Stephanie Massie and Jacob Denning (Team 2), second place
