A 911 call led authorities to the man, who they believe was involved in a single bicycle crash and may have had a medical episode, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office reports. According to investigators, there do not appear to be any signs of alcohol or drug impairment.
He was found shortly after 9 p.m. Monday on the sidewalk on the west side of the drawbridge near the beach access. The man was taken to a local hospital by ambulance for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
The bicyclist is described as a white man in his late 50s to early 60s, approximately 5-foot-9 and 220 pounds. He has salt-and-pepper hair, sideburns and a mustache, investigators said. He was wearing blue cargo shorts and some jewelry, including a ring on his right hand and a silver metal banded watch. He has no scars, tattoos or other identifying marks, officials said.
Anyone with information that may assist deputies in identifying the bicylist is asked to contact Deputy Todd Nellebach of the sheriff's Major Accident Investigative Team at 727-582-6200.
