Here are the top three stories today in Dunedin:
- Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner with several exciting events happening in Dunedin on May 5. Casa Tina’s 30th annual Cinco de Mayo Street Fiesta is scheduled between 11:00 AM and 11:00 PM along Main Street and will feature Mariachi Guadalupe, Grupo Folklorico Mahetzi, free salsa lessons, Orquista Infinidad, a Mojinganga parade, a drum line, and dancing. You may also want to stop by Cinco de Mayo at Caledonia between 2:00 PM and midnight to tap this year’s batch of El Diablo Guapo, a Mexican lager brewed with lime zest and black peppercorns. The Fenway Hotel will also host a Cinco de Mayo Sunset Jazz Series with jazz music, street tacos, and drink specials between 5:00 and 7:00 PM. (Tampa Bay Times - Paid Subscription)
- Eight-year-old Chloe Grimes is inspiring others after throwing the first pitch at Tuesday's Dunedin High School vs. Hollins High School baseball game at TD Ballpark. Grimes, who is battling cancer for the second time said, “I feel excited. My favorite position is pitcher so I’m excited to be here.” Two weeks ago Grimes also threw out the first pitch at the Tampa Bay Rays game and got to meet her favorite player, Brett Phillips, before the game. She gave him a bracelet for good luck, which led to him hitting a home run! Grimes will have surgery next week, but she’s staying strong and offering a positive message to those in her shoes. (WFLA)
- Studio 1212 Art Gallery invites the public to its opening reception for a “Remembering Pachner” art exhibit on Sunday, May 1 from 12:00 to 3:00 PM. Enjoy light refreshments and live music with Laura Lee Hubbard, an international vocalist whose soulful inspired sounds have captivated audiences from New York to Japan. The event will celebrate how American painter William Pachner and Studio 1212’s history are interconnected, allow guests to meet and talk to local award-winning artists, and participate in a fun paint-along activity. This exhibit will run through June 5. (Facebook| Studio 1212)
Today in Dunedin:
- Halfway to Halloween at Cueni Brewing Co. (3:00 PM)
- Protein Ball Workshop at Hope Grove Co-work Dunedin (6:30 PM)
- Dining Out For Life 2022 at various restaurants in Pinellas County (All Day)
From my notebook:
- Did you know the osprey, a year-round resident of Dunedin, is a hawk with an outer reversible toe to help it grab fish? This allows the osprey to position the fish to be headfirst when flying for less wind resistance. The only other raptors known to have a reversible outer toe are owls. You can hear the osprey chirp around Dunedin, especially during the winter nesting months! (Facebook)
- Are you looking to get more involved in the community? Consider applying to become a member of Dunedin's Disability Advisory Committee. The committee acts as a facilitator for accessibility issues concerning City programs, services, and facilities. Those interested can learn more or apply online. (Application)
- Today, April 27, is the 17th annual Dining Out For Life event which supports services for people living with HIV/AIDS. All you have to do is eat out or order in from some of your favorite restaurants in Dunedin and around Pinellas County. Some participating restaurants include The Honu, Bone Apetit, Casa Tina, and Dunedin Smokehouse. Click the link to see a full list of participating restaurants. (DOFL)
