Here are the top three stories today in Dunedin:
- Dunedin Showcase Theater will present performances of “Death by Chocolate” between October 6 and October 9 at the Dunedin Community Center. Directed by Mike Cote, the show is described on the theater's website as, "Members of the newly renovated Meadowbrook Health Resort are dropping like flies, including famed chef Edith Chiles! On the eve of the grand re-opening, this is not the best advertisement. It's up to John Stone, the manager, to find the cause and the murderer. Delightfully sarcastic and cynical, Stone finds himself teaming up with Ed Parlor, mystery writer, and amateur sleuth, in a wacky race against time." Get your tickets now at the Dunedin Community Center or at the door on the day of the performance. (Tampa Bay Newspapers | Dunedin Showcase Theater)
- Have you heard of the giant penguin hoax that had Floridians fooled for decades? It started in 1948 when giant three-toed animal footprints were discovered on Clearwater Beach, seemingly coming out of the ocean. The prints were 14-inches long by 11-inches wide with a stride between four and six feet, leading to various sighting claims in the Tampa Bay area. One such sighting came from students at the Dunedin Flying School who claimed they had seen a large "furry log with a boar's head ... swimming in the water." The tracks continued to pop up in the area, triggering rumors of a 15-foot penguin beast lurking in the waters. It wasn't until 1988 that a local man named Tony Signorini revealed he and a friend, Al Williams, had made large metal feet which they attached to a pair of tennis shoes to execute the prank.
