Here are the top three stories today in Dunedin:

  1. Dunedin Parks & Recreation and the YMCA will offer a new Diabetes Prevention Program on September 14 at noon in the Hale Senior Activity Center. This is a community-based lifestyle improvement program for adults with prediabetes designed to empower with lasting lifestyle changes, improve overall health and reduce the chance of developing type-2 diabetes. The program begins with weekly one-hour classroom sessions with a trained lifestyle coach to learn about healthy eating, physical activity and lifestyle changes. Following these sessions, participants will meet monthly for added support in reaching their ultimate goals of reducing their body weight and participating in 150 minutes of physical activity per week. Fees are covered by most Medicare plans. Those interested should sign up soon as space is limited. (Dunedin Patch)
  2. This year's Honeymoon Island Fall Fest will take place on October 22 and October 23 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at Honeymoon Island State Park on Oasis Beach and the adjacent parking area. The event will feature an arts market, outdoor recreation activities, live music, food trucks, vendor tables and an array of engaging educational booths. Additionally, this year's Fall Fest will include Honeymoon Idol, a talent showcase highlighting local singers, songwriters, and musicians. It will take place on October 23 between 1 and 2 p.m. Fall Fest will be free with the regular paid admission to Honeymoon Island State Park. (Friends of the Island Parks | Honeymoon Idol)
  3. Dunedin Fine Arts Center is offering an advanced pastel painting class on Thursdays between 1 and 4 p.m. starting September 15. This class is ideal for artists who want to learn how to do the hard things with pastels. Each class starts with a demo before artists work independently on their own paintings. Some classes are still life, some are based on a live model, and some are based on photo references. Learn more at the link. (DFAC)

  • It's still the rainy season in Dunedin and the city of Dunedin wants to remind residents that the annual Fertilizer Summer restrictions are still in effect. According to the Pinellas County Fertilizer Ordinance, the sale and use of lawn and landscape fertilizer with nitrogen and/or phosphorous are prohibited in order to protect Pinellas County waters from harmful algae blooms through September 30.   • The Junior League of Clearwater-Dunedin Art Harvest has listed Patrick J. Reynolds as this year's featured artist. "I have a saying that you can never choose art, it chooses you!   • Jade Soap Shop is hosting a fruit and veggie Cold Process Soap Workshop on September 4 between 2 and 4 p.m. Participants will learn the science behind cold process soap making and how to handle lye safely.
