DUI Checkpoint At Kmart Parking Lot Near US 19 Friday

Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies will conduct a sobriety checkpoint from 10 p.m. Friday through 3 a.m. Saturday at the Kmart parking lot near US 19 and State Road 580.

Miriam Harrell was on the way home from dinner with friends March 20, 2004.

Less than two miles from her home, Harrell, 76, who was seated in the backseat of her friend's car, was hit by an impaired driver.

Instantly, she was killed.

In honor of Harrell, Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies will conduct a sobriety checkpoint from 10 p.m. Friday through 3 a.m. Saturday at the Kmart parking lot near US 19 and State Road 580, just outside Dunedin.

The sobriety checkpoints are conducted once a month at various locations throughout the county.

At the checkpoint, at 26996 US Highway 19 N, patrol, community policing, K-9 and narcotics deputies will be looking for alcohol and drug impaired drivers. Along with impaired drivers, deputies will be looking for driver license, registration, insurance, and equipment violations.

The Mobile Command Bus will be used for breath testing and the processing of arrested individuals.

Members of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Traffic Crash Investigations Unit, the Sheriff's Citizen Patrol and Explorer Post 900 will help with non-enforcement related tasks.
