Highland Games Celebrate Dunedin's Scottish Heritage

This year, the revelry and pageantry on display at the Dunedin Highland Games was punctuated by a somber note.

Alexander “Sandy” Keith, celebrated piping instructor who had been a major organizer of the games, died Feb. 2. 

So after the clans marched into and students paraded the grounds with bagpipes to their lips, the celebration ebbed and the crowd and officials took a few moments to pay homage to Keith.

James Everett took the stage play a rendition of “Flowers of the Forest,” a traditional Scottish tune.

And then it was to go back to the games, despite a sky that was heavy with ominous rain clouds.

There was caber tossing, tug of war and other feats of strength and shows of Scottish-American pride.
