Dunedin Parks & Rec Offers Differently Abled Program At MLK Recreation Center

DUNEDIN, FL — Dunedin Parks & Recreation is offering a new program called "Differently Abled" at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, 550 Laura Lane.

This drop-in program provides a weekly opportunity for tweens, teens and young adults with sensory, developmental or physical disabilities to explore and use the recreation center exclusively. Participants can enjoy video games, billiards, ping pong, indoor basketball and crafts Fridays from 12:30 to 2 p.m.

The cost is $3 per person.

Tucked away on a quiet, oak-lined street, the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center is a youth- and teen-based facility. It offers unique programs and events for tweens and teens, with the goal of providing a safe, positive environment to "hang out."

The facility also features a skate park and offers classes for adults including Okinawan karate and pickleball.

Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 18, the gym will be closed while the court is repaired and repainted. All basketball, senior basketball and pickleball drop-in's are cancelled.

The estimated reopening date is Thursday, Jan. 27. Thank you for your patience while we make these improvements.

The playground was designed with the help of the Youth Advisory Committee and features state-of-the-art equipment including a large play structure with "pods," "jacks" and a "DNA Strand" for imaginative climbing and jumping. It also features a bouncing balance beam, a pair of swings that can accommodate up to four kids at once, an old-fashioned merry-go-round and a large space net for climbing.
