Here are the top three stories in Dunedin today:
- San Jose Elementary School second-grade teacher Robert Gore has been chosen for this week's Bay News 9 A+ Teacher! Gore has been teaching at the Dunedin elementary school for 27 years, which he credits the community for. "I love what I do. I love the kids,” Gore told Bay News 9. “I love the families. I love the camaraderie. I love my colleagues. I just love San Jose. I love what I do, period." The school's principal, Lisa Brown, praised Gore saying, "It's Mr. Gore's relationships with his students and his families and his colleagues. He's very invested in all of those people, and it's genuine and they feel it because he cares so much about people, his students, families and colleagues, they're willing to learn and go deeper with their education with him." (Bay News 9)
- Dunedin High School has begun a collaboration with city officials, local business leaders, and community members who graduated from the school to form an alumni association. The association will be hosting various events for alumni including a football home opener Friday night at 7 p.m. To attend the event, you must first register for the alumni association on the DHS website under the "Alumni" tab. Once you've signed up, you can find events and purchase tickets through the alumni calendar. (DHS Alumni Association)
- This weekend's Wearable ART Fashion Show was a huge success. Models walked the runway in wearable art that ranged from bright and colorful to something straight out of a Tim Burton movie. Some were covered in deliberately placed balloons while others donned head-to-toe fabric. Check out some photos of the event in the Tampa Bay Times or on the city's Facebook page. - SPCA Tampa Bay is hosting a new speaker series at Love My Dog Resort on September 10. While summer is wrapping up, in Florida we still need to keep our pups cool. Dr. Mitchell, Chief Veterinary Officer at SPCA Tampa Bay Veterinary Center, will share simple tips with attendees on how to keep your dog cool, signs for when they may be too hot, and much more.
To attend this session, register via email to Natalie@lovemydogresort.com. (SPCA Tampa Bay via Facebook) - Looking to build the perfect sandcastle? Friends of the Island Parks shared an article titled "The hidden physics behind engineering a perfect sandcastle" to help you get started! (Friends of the Island Parks via Facebook | Fast Company)
- Andrew Pollack, co-writer of "Why Meadow Died,” will be speaking at the Dunedin Community Center on September 10 at noon. Pollack's daughter Meadow was one of the victims of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida in 2018. He has since become an advocate for school safety and has spoken out against the policies that made this horrific tragedy possible. Attend the event to hear Pollack speak on how we can keep our kids, teachers, and school staff safe. (Stephanie Meyer for Pinellas School Board via Facebook)
