Here are the top three stories in Dunedin today:

  1. Dunedin Achieva Credit Union launched the first crypto services app in Florida on Tuesday, allowing users to buy and sell Bitcoin on the go. Previously, Achieva members could make Bitcoin trades on third-party apps, but the new app will allow members to do all their banking on a single app, making the process easier. Achieva partnered with Bitcoin trading company NYDIG on the app. If you're looking to get into cryptocurrency, Achieva members can get $5 in Bitcoin by signing up for a crypto account during the app's initial rollout. (Tampa Bay Times - Subscription Required)
  2. Dunedin Highland Middle School Band Director, Gregory Urban, has been selected as a quarterfinalist for the 2023 Grammy Music Educator Award! According to the Grammy website, "The Music Educator Award was established to recognize current educators ... who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools." Over 200 educators from 180 cities around the country made it to the quarterfinals of 1,500 nominees. The semifinalists will be announced in September. (Grammy Awards)
  3. In preparation for Dunedin Pride, the city posted a video of Dunedin Chamber of Commerce Chairman, Gregory Brady, speaking about the importance of the week-long celebration. "What we're celebrating is all the different aspects of diversity and those allies that we rely on to integrate well in society." In the video, Brady discusses some of the upcoming Pride events and how supportive the town is of the LGBTQ community. "It has been amazing how our community tends to come together ... All of our sponsors that have come forward, most of them are our small business community, which is really telling that, you know, we do have that support. We are a diverse town and Pride is going to celebrate that." (Dunedin Patch | Youtube)

  • The Honu has announced the addition of a new Rum Bar! It starts a soft opening for Ka Pakele next week. So far, all we know is the bar will be located inside the restaurant, but I'm sure it'll be a big hit. (The Honu via Facebook)
  • Speaking of The Honu, it is hosting a special Dunedin Pride event on June 16 between 6 and 9 p.m. Ladies Luau will include hula dancers, live Hawaiian music with Kalani Rose, craft cocktail specials and a Luau plate special made up of kalua pork and some delicious sounding sides. Learn more on the Facebook event page. (The Honu via Facebook)
  • The Scottish American Society of Dunedin will host Watch Party Wednesday: Pride Edition on June 15 at 7:30 p.m. The event will include three short films that celebrate pride and the LGBTQ community. This is a non-ticketed event, so get there early as seats will likely fill up fast! Read a description of the films on the Facebook event page. (Scottish American Society of Dunedin via Facebook)
  • Reminder: The Dunedin Give Back continues to host a Girl Power Drive. It’s accepting donations of feminine products including maxi pads, mini pads, panty liners and tampons through the end of June. With this drive, the Give Back aims to bring attention to the lack of access to menstrual health products for homeless or low-income people. (The Dunedin Give Back via Facebook | Dunedin Cares)
  • Missing out on Dunedin Pride this year? Local photographer Lisa Sampietro of Dorky Daisy Photography is attending many of the Pride events in Dunedin and will be sharing her professional photos with us for free!
