Here are the top three stories today in Dunedin:

  1. The City of Dunedin's hilarious "Scoop the Poop PSA" video is capturing the attention of various news outlets in the Tampa Bay area. The video, which stars the New World Celts of Dunedin, reminds dog owners to clean up after their pets, but not for the reason you may think. According to the city, pets in the Tampa Bay area drop 125 tons of pet waste per day. When it's not picked up and discarded, the waste can wash away into nearby bodies of water, damaging or killing off the local plant and animal life. Of course, cleaning up after your dog is also a common courtesy and the right thing to do. You can watch the video for yourself on YouTube. (FOX 13 Tampa | 99.5 QYK | YouTube)
  2. Dunedin's Hale Senior Activity Center has released its August Newsletter containing all of its upcoming events. In addition to regular health screenings, classes, support groups and card games, the senior center will be hosting several special activities. These include Hippie Bingo on August 8, a Hurricane Preparedness seminar on August 9, Dunedin's Transportation Expo on August 10, a Casino Luncheon on August 17, and the new Readers Theater program on August 24. You can find a full schedule of events in the newsletter. (Dunedin Patch | Newsletter)
  3. The Dunedin Blue Jays are hosting a Salty Soul Night on August 12 at TD Ballpark in an effort to help bring awareness to the growing trash problem on Florida’s beaches. Your ticket purchase will include a seat and ballpark meal. For each ticket purchased, $5 will be donated to the Salty Soul Foundation and assist in local beach cleanups. Get to the game at 6:30 p.m. a grab some BOGO margaritas before heading to your seat! (Salty Soul Night via Facebook| Ticketmaster)

  • The City of Dunedin reminds boaters to be aware of seagrass meadows when operating a boat. In order to protect the area's seagrass communities, boaters should practice responsible boating. You can do so by using navigation channels or deeper water while on plane, angling or trimming up the engine when boating over seagrass beds, powering off the engine if the boat runs aground, or trimming up the motor, then pushing the boat to a safe depth. (City of Dunedin via Facebook)
  • Did you know if you bring your own mug or tumbler to TüKrō Coffee, you'll receive 10 percent off your order? According to the cafe's Facebook post, "We get to save some trees, prevent more plastic in our landfills and all while getting a discount from the rising costs of inflation." (TüKrō Coffee via Facebook)
  • The student advisory board at Lotz of Blessings held a lemonade stand at Hope Grove in Dunedin over the weekend to raise money for back-to-school shoes for foster kids. After three hours, they raised $250 for their fundraiser, and a later update indicated they were up to $700! (Lotz of Blessings via Facebook | Lotz of Blessings)
