  1. The Scottish American Society of Dunedin is hosting its first Scottish Heritage Day at the Scottish Cultural Center in Dunedin on August 27 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The event will kick off with Scottish storytelling in English and Gaelic, coloring, fingerprinting and songs for kids until 10 a.m. Afterward, there will be Gaelic lessons, songs and a "special performance." Scotch eggs, sausage rolls and crisps will be served for lunch at noon and will be followed by Scottish genealogy and history. Tickets are $5 for kids and $15 for adults. (Dunedin Patch)
  2. According to the City of Dunedin, about 300 people are struck by lightning in the United States each year. Of those struck, an average of 30 people are killed and others suffer lifelong disabilities. Most of these tragedies can be prevented. Thunderstorms and lightning are common occurrences in our area. Be sure to get inside a building or a hard-topped metal vehicle when lightning strikes. Head to the city website for more suggestions on ways to lower your exposure to injury from a lightning storm. 3. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for Femme Akoi Beauty Studio is scheduled for September 9 between 3:00 and 5 p.m. at 1425 Main Street. This event is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend. Femme Akoi offers various beauty services including hair cuts, hair coloring, professional makeup, hair styling and false lashes. It offers services at the salon or on location for special events such as weddings. (Dunedin Chamber of Commerce | Femme Akoi)

From my notebook:

  • Pack-A-Snack events run by The Dunedin Give Back are starting up again for the fall. Join them on the first and third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. on the back patio at HOB Brewing Co. The Pack-A-Snack program helps feed disadvantaged children in Dunedin who receive free meals at school during the week, and likely don't have access to adequate food over the weekend. School faculty ensure these designated children receive a bag of healthy, pre-packaged snacks each Friday afternoon. Stop by with a donation or to help pack some bags! (The Dunedin Give Back via Facebook)
  • Dunedin Friends of the Library shared photos of the plants salvaged by the Dunedin Garden Club from the Kellogg Mansion. They've been planted at the Dunedin Public Library near the Butterfly Garden, reserving a little piece of history! (Dunedin Friends of the Library)
  • Reminder: Midnite Madness for kids between nine and 14 is scheduled for Friday between 7 p.m. and midnight at Dunedin's Stirling Skate Park! Kids can skate, scooter and play all night! (Dunedin Gov)
  • The City of Dunedin reminds parents that school safety starts at the bus stop. Be sure to share these tips with your children: (1) Arrive at the bus stop five minutes early. (2) Stand five giant steps away from the curb. (3) Wait until the bus stops, the door opens and the driver says it’s okay before stepping onto the bus. (4) Be sure the bus driver can always see you, and you can see the bus driver. (City of Dunedin via Facebook)
