Here are the top three stories today in Dunedin:

  1. Artist Tom Stovall, who is working on the Dunedin water tower mural, was stuck midair for about an hour on Friday before rescuers could safely bring him back down to the ground. After wrapping up for the day, Stovall was lowering the basket he uses to climb the tower when the equipment stopped working. Dunedin Fire and Rescue were alerted of the situation around 2 p.m. Video of the incident shows a rescuer strapping himself to Stovall before rappelling down the tower. According to the article, Stovall said he'll be using a ladder while working on the project moving forward. (WTSP.com)
  2. The display of hanging umbrellas on Douglas Avenue has inspired a similar installation in East Liverpool, Ohio. Mary Beth Gill, a member of The East Liverpool-Calcutta Area Garden Club, spotted the umbrellas on a visit to Dunedin with her husband and brought the idea home with her. Construction of Umbrella Alley began in Ohio last weekend along East Fifth Street in between the Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame/Lou Holtz Museum and the former Crooks Furniture building. It will be made up of 80 umbrellas, each with a small wooden tag hanging from its handle containing a special message from community members. Beneath the umbrellas will be a string of lights and some bistro tables and chairs for public use. (Business Journal Daily)
  3. Caladesi Island was ranked number two on Dr. Beach's 2022 Best Beaches In America list! Dr. Beach, also known as coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, has been publishing his list of the top beaches in the country since 1991. This year, Caladesi Island is number two on the list just under Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach in North Carolina. He considers 50 criteria points when ranking the country's beaches, including the softness of the sand, wind speeds, number of sunny days, water temperature, amount of litter, the presence of sewage runoff or algae, and the crowds. Leatherman's work takes him to beaches all over the country where he mostly focuses on studying beach erosion and storm impacts. (Dunedin Patch)
