- Dunedin Parks & Recreations will offer youth co-ed basketball leagues in partnership with the Dunedin Jr. Falcons. Registration is now open for the league which is made up of two co-ed divisions, one for kids ages eight to 10 and another for kids 11 to 13. This is a recreational league for both new and seasoned players interested in focusing on skill development, instruction, teamwork, hand-eye coordination, social skills, sportsmanship, and confidence. Kids must attend one of two evaluation clinics, which will take place on May 7 at 10:45 AM and May 11 at 6:30 PM. Games will begin the weekend of June 10. Register your child online now or by visiting the MLK, Jr. Recreation Center. (Dunedin Patch)
- High-tech birthing manikins are helping BayCare nurses save real lives by simulating emergency situations. These manikins are incredibly life-like as they breathe, have a pulse, cry, and describe their symptoms. Labor and Delivery nurse Bri Gibson described the manikin saying, "Its fake cord feels like a real umbilical cord. It has a placenta. You can hook it up to a fetal monitor and program the heart rate to drop just like it would. You practice in a friendly way. You can pause, touch, slow down to ask questions. There's no fear of harming the patient.'' Gibson used her skills learned from her lesson with the manikin in a real-life situation when she faced a delivery with a prolapsed umbilical cord, which is an emergency situation causing decreased blood flow and oxygen to the baby. Fortunately, her training with the manikin prepared her for this kind of emergency and a healthy baby was delivered.
