Readers Respond to Sandbag Unavailability

Tropical Storm Andrea brought to light the fact that Pinellas County does not offer sandbags to unincorporated areas like East Lake.

In regards to offering sandbags to the public in the event of a large storm, Pinellas County stated:

“Pinellas County does not provide sandbags to the public in order to dedicate the county's resources to protecting the county interests by securing county property (public buildings, parks, Heritage Village, education centers, etc.), preparing shelters in case they are needed, making sure the county's fleet is ready for service and doing many other tasks that are all part of the county's emergency preparedness plans.”

A couple East Lake Patch readers spoke out on the topic.

"Our county resources are OUR taxes. Go pound sand, I guess the residents will beg Tarpon Springs for sandbags," John Kramer commented.

Harvey A. Smith responded to Kramer's comment with, "There are specific areas prone to serious flooding in the Unincorporated sections of the county. Better financial planning and allocation of tax revenues by County Commissioners for emergency use is obviously needed. You would think that County Commissioners would prioritize the need to protect private property owners since they pay the taxes...and vote!"
