📰 News we're reading

• Should Las Olas trees stay or go? Fort Lauderdale expected to decide Tuesday (sun-sentinel.com) — Fort Lauderdale commissioners are set to decide Tuesday whether to remove the iconic black olive tree median on Las Olas Boulevard to widen sidewalks and add more outdoor dining. Residents and business leaders are sharply divided over the multimillion-dollar redesign, with some calling it destructive and others saying aging trees must be replaced. The outcome could reshape one of the city’s signature streets for decades.

• ‘Creeped out' or crime solvers? License plate readers in South Florida a controversial tool (sun-sentinel.com) — Fort Lauderdale drivers are being scanned by automated license plate readers, including Flock Safety cameras already mounted on city streets like Northeast Fourth Avenue. Local and regional police say the technology helps solve crimes and share leads, while critics warn it amounts to quiet mass surveillance with potential misuse and immigration-related concerns. Agencies won’t reveal exact camera locations, citing security reasons.

• Inter Miami signs ex-Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon (upi.com) — Inter Miami, whose MLS Cup title was clinched in Fort Lauderdale on Dec. 6, has signed veteran left back Sergio Reguilon to a two-year deal. The move helps fill gaps left by recent retirements as the club prepares for its 2026 season and new stadium opener.
