Gulfport Post Office Gets a Face Lift

A $40,000 renovation project is under way at the Gulfport Post Office.

Starting Wednesday, customers will notice a few changes inside the Gulfport Beach Bazaar. The post office boxes - dating to at least the '90s - will be torn down first as part of a $40,000 renovation project.

Currently the post office is located in the southwest corner of the bazaar. The construction project will move it closer to the front entrance and located right next to a new check out counter and register space. The area will have brand new equipment including a touch screen register.

Owners of the bazaar, Angela and Biff Lagan, say the new layout will allow all customers to check out in one spot. The best part about the project is that the U.S. Postal Service is paying for it. When the Lagans were awarded the contract in December, they were also given the opportunity to improve the near century old post office at no cost to them.

The post office will not close during construction; however, there will no longer be post office boxes for rent. Don't worry, they'll still be seen inside the bazaar. Lagan says they're going to reuse the boxes as decor for the new counter space and they're going to use larger boxes to store tickets for upcoming events.

"It's going to say The Beach Bazaar Box Office," she said.

The project should be completely done by late February.
