Don't Toss Out Trash, Fines Likely to Increase

If you're caught littering in Gulfport, it could cost you $93. If found guilty of a contested violation, the cost increases to $138.

But, if the city council moves forward with a new ordinance, the cost would increase to $143 and $188.

The Gulfport City Council voted four to one, with Council Member Jennifer Salmon casting the only no vote, during first reading of the proposed ordinance Tuesday night.

Salmon voted no because she thinks the city can increase awareness with more signs or more education about the current fine.

Council Member Sam Henderson brought up the idea, months ago, of increasing litter fines to further penalize those littering in Gulfport.

The council will vote again during second reading of this ordinance during a regular city council meeting in January. The Tuesday, Dec. 20 meeting has been cancelled.
