• Veteran KBPD officer saves two people from capsized kayak near Hobie Beach (islandernews.com) — A longtime Key Biscayne police officer is being hailed for rescuing two kayakers whose boat capsized near Hobie Beach, earning the department’s Life Saving Award at a Village Council meeting. Officer Gordon Spitler, a veteran marine operator and instructor, sped to the scene alone, pulled one exhausted man from the water, coordinated the second rescue, and now hopes to use the incident as a training example.
