LAKELAND, FL — An 80-year-old Lakeland man died Monday after being struck by a car outside a Publix supermarket.

Henry Newman was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Center, where he passed away late Monday afternoon, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened around 10:20 a.m. outside the Publix at 6767 US Highway 98 North in Lakeland.

The sheriff's office said Newman was hit while he was walking in a crosswalk in front of the store.

"He was struck by a blue 2012 Ford Fusion driven by 85-year-old Marvin Toso of Lakeland," said the sheriff's office.

Newman was knocked to the ground.

"The front driver's side tire ran over the man's legs and the car stopped above him," according to the sheriff's office. "Firefighters used airbags to lift the car off of the man."

The sheriff's office said alcohol was not suspected. The incident was under investigation but no charges were expected.
