Car Flies Into Air, Smashes Into Tree And Kills Driver: FHP

The Florida Highway Patrol investigated a single fatal crash on Interstate-4 near Polk County Rest Area.

POLK COUNTY, FL — A 39-year-old Wesley Chapel man died on Wednesday, a day after his car hit a tree and flipped over, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

On Tuesday, the victim drove westbound just before 9:30 p.m. on Interstate-4 near the Polk County Rest Area entrance ramp when his vehicle flew in the air after it crashed into a nearby ditch. As it was in the air, the car smashed into a tree, and then it flipped over, investigators said.

There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.

The driver was pronounced dead at a local hospital on Wednesday, authorities said.

Due to Marsy's Law, the Florida Highway Patrol will not release the name of the victim.
