Car Crashes Into Light Pole On U.S. 27 Killing Davenport Woman On New Year's Day: Cops

POLK COUNTY, FL — A wrong-way crash killed an 83-year-old Davenport woman New Year's Day, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Helen McDonald drove south on U.S. Highway 27 Saturday afternoon just south of Bella Citta when she drove across a grass median and crossed over northbound lanes smashing into a power pole, deputies said.

Investigators said it is unknown why her car drove into the northbound lanes.

Medical staff pronounced her dead at a local hospital , according to police.
