POLK COUNTY, FL — Many Polk County residents celebrate Earth Day annually to protect the planet from pollution by picking up litter, planting trees and raising awareness about environmental issues on April 22.
According to National Geographic, the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 when a U.S. senator from Wisconsin organized a national demonstration about the impact of pollution on humans' and animals' health.
By the end of 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency came into existence. Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe by 1990.
