Former Prom Queen, Now County Inmate, Dies At Lakeland Hospital
The 29-year-old woman had been transferred from the Central County Jail infirmary in Bartow on Monday.

BARTOW, FL — Shamirah Johnson was a former prom queen who graduated from Families of Faith Christian Academy in 2006. She logged more than 1,000 community service hours volunteering as a member of the Junior Auxiliary at the Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center. She died Tuesday at the hospital as a county inmate.
The 29-year-old Johnson had been transferred from the Central County Jail infirmary in Bartow on Monday, the Lakeland Ledger reported. On Oct. 30 Johnson had complained of not feeling well, was vomiting and had diarrhea, according to a Polk County Sheriff’s Office news release. She was treated at the jail infirmary and later was transferred to the hospital.
At some point in recent years, Johnson got involved with drugs. She was arrested by Lakeland police on a warrant for violation of probation on Oct. 24. In March, she was sentenced to one year of probation for possession of prescription medication without a prescription, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia.
