Four Vendors Face 'Jailbreak' Charges At Flea Market: Sheriff

Four suspects at an Auburndale flea market are accused by the Polk County Sheriff's Office of selling jailbroken Amazon Fire Sticks.

AUBURNDALE, FL — Four vendors at the International Market World Flea Market near Auburndale were accused by deputies of selling "jailbroken" Amazon Fire Sticks.

The suspects marketed the illegal devices as "a way to steal internet communication services," according to investigators. Jailbreak means modifying an electronic device with added software and plugins in such a way that it allows the user to view movies and TV shows (internet-based digital content) they would have had to pay for.

Deputies said each of the suspects sold the devices at individual booths set up at the market.

"Just as retail crime affects the consumer by driving up the cost of goods, stealing content from internet streaming companies drives up the cost of those services, negatively impacting the consumer's wallet," Sheriff Grady Judd said. "Consumers beware, there really is not an honest way to get something for nothing.'"

Authorities arrested the four suspects at 1052 U.S. Highway 92 West, Auburndale, Saturday, on advertise to promote the sale of intercept device charges.
