Hurricane Irma Claims 2nd Victim In Polk County

The death of a Lakeland man has been tied to Hurricane Irma in Polk County. Medical examiner says man died of heart attack from cleanup.

LAKELAND, FL — Hurricane Irma has claimed its second victim in Polk County. District 10 Medical Examiner Stephen Nelson confirms that Carlos Arencibia, 63, of Lakeland died Wednesday while cleaning debris from the storm. A 7-year-old girl died last week.

Nelson said Carlos Arencibia died from a heart attack. Terryn Wilson, 7, died due to “carbon monoxide intoxication” by inhaling fumes from a generator. Nelson determined that the cause of death was accidental.

The girl’s mother, Shashunda Wilson, told Polk County sheriff’s detectives that she obtained a generator after the storm and had never used one before. The sheriff’s office said “she was not aware that it could not be in the home.”
