Lakeland Girl Recognized For Helping Family Escape House Fire

The Lakeland Fire Department honored Zniayah Armstrong, 9, Wednesday for helping her family escape a house fire in June.

LAKELAND, FL — The Lakeland Fire Department honored a 9-year-old girl Wednesday for helping her family escape a house fire in June.

Lakeland Fire Chief Doug Riley recognized Zniayah Armstrong with a certificate for her quick thinking.

Firefighters said when her home caught on fire in June, she helped her siblings escape and got help from a neighbor to assist her grandmother to safety.

"We are so proud of her and her courage to remain calm and take charge of a stressful situation," the fire department posted to Facebook.

The Kids Wish Network also honored Armstrong with a $300 Walmart gift card, a care package and named her "Hero of the Month."

"Zniayah performed the most courageous act when she saved the lives of her siblings and grandmother," the organization tweeted.
