Lakeland Man Killed When Pickup Drives Onto Sidewalk

A 63-year-old Lakeland man is dead following a Tuesday afternoon crash on Harden Boulevard.

LAKELAND, FL — The Lakeland Police Department is investigating a fatal Tuesday afternoon crash involving a pedestrian and a pickup truck.

According to the agency, Glenn Gillenwater, 63, was walking on the sidewalk along Harden Boulevard, near Forest Park Street, around 2:45 p.m. Jan. 10. At that time, Michael Duey, 26, was heading south on Harden Boulevard in a 1984 Ford pickup.

Witnesses told police Duey began to swerve, “drove up onto the raised shoulder and struck Gillenwater,” an email from the agency said. “Duey’s truck continued down an embankment and struck two trees before coming to a final rest.”

Lakeland and Polk County rescue crews responded to the scene. Both Gillenwater and Duey were taken to Lakeland Regional Health Center.

“Gillenwater passed away due to injuries sustained in the crash,” the police department reported. Duey was treated for minor injuries and was released.

The crash prompted a three-hour closing of Harden Boulevard from Beacon Road to Ariana Street.

No charges have been filed, pending the outcome of the investigation. No further information is being released at this time.
