Man Threatens To Kill Wife In Lakeland Home, Deputies Kill Him: Sheriff

A man was shot and killed in front of his Lakeland home after his wife and neighbor said he'd been shooting inside and outside the trailer.

POLK COUNTY, FL — Deputies shot and killed a 56-year-old man as he stood outside his mobile home holding a rifle on Friday night after he fired the gun inside and outside his Lakeland home, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Michael Loman's wife told 911 operators at 6:07 p.m. he had threatened to kill her, a news release from the department said.

Loman told his wife that if authorities came to their house in the 39200 block of Combee Road, he would be killed by officers, deputies said.

Loman's wife was taken to safety at 6:18 p.m. when deputies arrived, the sheriff's office said, and Loman went to the front porch holding his rifle at about the same time.

According to the news release, five deputies asked Loman to put down his gun multiple times.

Deputies said Loman would not put down his rifle, and four of the five deputies fired at him. The department didn't say how man times Loman was struck.

According to the sheriff's office, Loman was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:22 p.m.

The names of the deputies who fired their weapons will be released later on Monday, the department said.

It's standard protocol for an immediate follow-up investigation after a Polk County Sheriff's Office deputy/deputies shoot and kill someone. For this case, there are four investigations, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office: A death investigation by the PCSO Bureau of Criminal Investigations; an internal investigation by the PCSO Administrative Investigations Unit; an autopsy by the Medical Examiner; and the State Attorney's Office, who was on-scene and will be conducting an independent review.

This is a developing story. Patch will include names of the deputies when the Polk County Sheriff's Office releases them.
