Lakeland Teen Dies In Single Car Crash With Tree: Police
Police have asked if anyone knows information about a single car crash that killed a teenager and injured another to please contact them.
LAKELAND, FL — A 17-year-old Lakeland boy died in a single car crash on Sleepy Hill Road on Sunday morning, a police news release said.
Detectives with the Lakeland Police Department said at 3:40 a.m., a 2008 Ford Expedition drove eastbound on Sleepy Hill Road near the intersection of Kennedy Boulevard when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The SUV hit a tree in the median.
The driver was pronounced dead by Polk County emergency officials at the crash location. A 17-year-old female passenger was transported to Lakeland Regional Health with non-life-threatening injuries, investigators said.

The roadway was shut down for six hours during the police investigation. Excessive speed does appear to be a factor in this crash, authorities said.
