Winter Haven police said an officer shot a man in the leg to stop him from continuing to stab a woman.

WINTER HAVEN, FL — Winter Haven police said an officer shot a man in the leg to stop him from continuing to stab a woman.

On Wednesday afternoon, police received a domestic disturbance call at 2316 Isle Royal Court SE in Winter Haven Wednesday in which a witness said 35-year-old Nathan Armstrong was stabbing a woman in his home.

Officers entered the home, where they said they encountered Armstrong, who continued to stab the woman with a knife.

An officer said he ordered Armstrong to drop the knife, but Armstrong continued to attack the woman, so the officer fired his service weapon, striking Armstrong in the leg. Police then placed Armstrong in handcuffs and gave medical aid Armstrong and his victim.

Both were taken to the hospital, where they are being treated for injuries that are not life-threatening.

"Our officer saved this victim's life," said Winter Haven Police Chief David Brannan. "Had our officer not taken the immediate action to stop Armstrong, the outcome for the victim could have been much worse."

Because it's early in the investigation, Brannan said only limited information is available.

The 10th Judicial Circuit Task Force, overseen by the Polk County Sheriff's Office, is handling the officer-involved shooting aspect of the investigation.
