Let’s be clear. The rich, the powerful, the arrogant who want to manipulate and rule over others all ignore God’s Word at their own peril.

There is arguably no other belief system on planet Earth that even comes close to having the number of fulfilled prophecies as Christianity. While the exact count is disputed by Scripture scholars, the Bible has some 200 plus prophecies related to the coming of Jesus Christ. Those prophetic utterances were sometimes hundreds or thousands of years before the Virgin Birth. While some question the Biblically referenced Virgin birth of Jesus by Mary, which is harder to believe? That God made everyone and everything in existence out of nothingness? Or that by suspending the laws of nature (which God created), that God the Father gave a perfectly pure mother to His Only Begotten Son, Jesus? When someone believes the first one, believing the other certainly ought to become easier. When someone believes God created the heavens and the earth, do billionaires, the powerful and connected rationally think they are more potent than God who created everything?

Heaven help those who think they can disadvantage the many by their schemes and that convinced themselves that they and their cronies can thumb their nose at God, fail to repent, and then think they will escape perdition's flames. So, when masses wonder, is their true justice available on Earth? The short answer. Yes, there is perfect justice on Earth. There is also perfect mercy too, and God delivers it all along with the promise of a life that is so glorious, we the quick can scarcely imagine how glorious - and unending - it will be.

Those are some of the thoughts that came to my mind as I read Rev. Emmanuel Akalue's homily for today.

We celebrate the 33rd Sunday of the Year and share the message, “Being mindful of the Signs of the End in anticipation of Judgment Day.” Beloved, common experience shows us everything in this world is moving toward its end. When you buy a new car or purchase a new home everything looks beautiful, smelling fresh and appealing; but, after some years, the glamor fades and they begin to need periodic maintenance until eventually they become irreparable. It is the same with human life. We start out young and healthy; but as we get older, we need more medical care to keep us going, until eventually nothing more can be done. All these signs symbolize the gradual coming of the ultimate end of days.

Notice, in our Gospel Passage (Luke 21:5-19), while people were admiring the beauty of the physical temple “adorned with costly stones and votive offerings”, Jesus shockingly declared, “All that you see here – the days will come when … [all will] be thrown down.” Here, he predicted the fall of Jerusalem which took place in the year 70AD; and thereby indicated the end of all things. Surely, if the temple of God could suffer such a fate, what about ordinary earthly things? Clearly, the Church is not necessarily about the external architectural design or beauty of its buildings (cf. 1Cor 6:19-20). God certainly wants our Churches to look beautiful and well cared for. But more importantly, He wants the spiritual beauty of His people – their living in oneness, love, humility, forgiveness, compassion, patience, knowledge of Him and faith in Him – to be paramount.

As soon as Jesus hinted about the end, the people were touched and asked, “Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?” Jesus did not answer the first question. Though God-man, He had already stated (speaking as man) that “of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only” (Matt 24:36). So, since we do not know the exact date, we need to be prepared at all times. However, Jesus did answer the second question: “What sign will there be…?” FIRST, He stated, “Do not be deceived; many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’… Do not follow them!” This is a clear caution against many, including married couples, founding their private churches today. Please, do not be deceived: There is no woman bishop and no ‘Husband and Wife Church’ anywhere in the Bible. SECOND, “You [will] hear of wars and insurrections.” Is this not happening in our world now, even more than ever before? Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine is just one example. Many other conflicts are looming in different hot spots around the globe. THIRD, “There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place.” Wow! Surely, we usually blame climate change or global warming for natural disasters. FOURTH, “they will seize and persecute you…. You will be hated by all because of my name.” We can see the persecution of the Church and of Christians is on the rise around the world. While all of these events are indeed indicative of the end, there is yet much more to come in “awesome sights and mighty signs” from the sky. All these signs of the end anticipate Judgment Day.

In Saint Paul’s time in the Second Reading (2Thess 3:7-12), when people heard these warnings, many became disoriented, experienced nervous breakdowns and conducted “themselves … in a disorderly way, by not keeping busy but minding the business of others.” They stopped going to work, stopped taking their children to school and only gossiped and idled away their time. But how should we respond to these warnings? Please, do not become nervous and waste time speculating when the world will end. Do not overreact by selling off your homes and quitting your jobs. Not at all! (cf. Luke 21:28). Jesus reassures His followers, the meek and humble who fear the Lord, “Do not be terrified.” Have faith and persevere in the Lord through following the teachings of His Church (cf. Luke 10:16). Only the wicked, the proud and arrogant people need to be afraid of what is coming (cf. Luke 21:25-27).

A horrible tsunami happened in a certain village. Everything was swept away by the incredible power of the “flood” – people, homes, animals and plants. But many survived the unforeseen disaster because they sheltered on rocks which proved to be indestructible. Jesus, the Word of God, is the Rock of our salvation. Scripture says, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words will not pass away.” If we lean on Jesus and His Word, we will prevail forever: “not a hair on your head will be destroyed." What a blessed hope we have as disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ! This is exactly what the First Reading (Mal 3:19-20) envisioned, stating unambiguously: On Judgment Day, “blazing like an oven… all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble…but for you who fear [God’s]… name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays.” Wow! May God help us to always stand on the rock of Christ until the end and see God face to face on the Last Day, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen!
