Paul Steinhauser: 'Election reflection: 'Democrats flipped script' on affordability in ballot box showdown'

"Idiotic to overreact to a couple of elections in blue states." Seriously? What Steinhauser didn't say.

About half-a-day after yours truly published "A first look at 11.4.2025 Election Results. Why Democrats Won. Why Republicans Lost" Paul Steinhauser via right-leaning Fox News' published "Election reflection: 'Democrats flipped the script' on affordability in ballot box showdowns." ICYMI, in that "Reality Check" series Patch post yours truly said in part: "It isn't enough to say 'these were blue states or blue cities.' Republicans have won in these areas before, why not now?"

That same post also said this.

Let's look at Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger (D). Per her X.com feed: "As Governor, make no mistake — I will make lowering everyday costs across Virginia my top priority."

Now, let's see what Steinhauser said via Fox.

The economy, the issue that hurt Democrats in the 2024 elections, gave them a major boost in this year's ballot box showdowns. One year after deep concerns over inflation helped Republicans win back the White House and Senate and keep their House majority, Democrats say their convincing double-digit victories in 2025's only two elections for governor came down to affordability, the issue they repeatedly spotlighted on this year's campaign trail.

Missing from Steinhauser's report was this key that is curiously missing from Fox.

Never mind that it was Democrats under Biden-Harris that drove costs higher or more "unaffordable." Republicans obviously didn't tap into enough history balanced by current events and concerns.

Note that then House Majority Whip James Clyburn (SC-D) said Democrats knew they were going to cause inflation and said so via left-leaning MSNBC.

Back to Steinhauser for Fox in his article posted earlier today.

Veteran Republican strategist Ryan Williams told Fox News Digital that "affordability has been a major issue since inflation spiked after the pandemic. President Biden wasn’t able to contain inflation and the Democrats suffered at the polls in 2024. President Trump has had a year in office. He has been able to reduce the rate of inflation. There’s more work to do. Things don’t change overnight."

While some of that is okay, pardon me? Where is the mention that Democrats knew they were going to cause inflation? And where was the correction that it has now been a year since the 2024 election, but only about 9 months of Trump in office?

Don't get me wrong. For numbers of politicians and much of the mainstream media, this is about 'messaging' and 'narrative' control.

Democrats won in blue states and won by bigger margins that 4 years ago. But for voters, particular independent voters like yours truly, much of this is about lived reality as well as grasping the principles of cause and effect.

Steinhauser for Fox also said this.

"I think it's idiotic to overreact to a couple of elections in blue states," Vice President JD Vance said in a social media post. But Vance acknowledged that when it comes to the economy and specifically inflation, "We're going to keep on working to make a decent life affordable in this country, and that's the metric by which we'll ultimately be judged in 2026 and beyond."

Fair enough. But another point that is missing is that much of the media still tilts left and that 'information dominance' allows Democratic candidates in Democratic states to escape some of the responsibility they might otherwise hold IF mainstream media was more balanced in holding all candidates equally accountable.

The next few days will be busier than normal, so it may be next week before I can get into some additional insights in the 11.4.2025 voting like that which are being missed.

And let me draw towards a close on a common theme for yours truly. The single most expensive thing that most Americans experience is housing cost. Until the cost of housing comes down, the problems of 'inflation' and the cost of living is not going to improve enough to dig millions of people out of the added debt that occurred in the post-COVID19 era.
