Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck By Truck In Lakeland

A 64-year-old man died Tuesday after being struck by a Chevrolet truck.

LAKELAND, FL — A 64-year-old man died Tuesday after being struck by a Chevrolet truck as he attempted to cross the street with his walker, according to Lakeland police.

The pedestrian was later identified as Frank McConnell. Police said on Wednesday that McConnell was crossing in an area not marked for pedestrians.

Lakeland police said the incident happened around 7 p.m. Monday in the 1300 block of Ariana Street.

The driver of the truck was identified as 74-year-old Timothy Hamp, who stopped and remained at the scene. He had been traveling east at the time of the crash.

"Hamp provided a statement and consented to an on-scene blood draw," Lakeland police said.

Police said McConnell was leaving the parking lot of the Central Park Plaza.

He was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Center, where he died.

"Sadly, Frank McConnell passed away at the hospital on Tuesday, Dec. 31 at approximately 12:09 p.m. from injuries he sustained in the crash," Lakeland police said.

The road was shut down for about 3 ½ hours as a result of the crash.

The Lakeland Police Department Patrol Unit, Polk County Fire Rescue and Lakeland Fire Department all attempted to provide life-saving measures to McConnell.

Hamp, a Lakeland resident, was not injured.
