Polk County Bicyclist Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver

LAKE WALES, FL -- A 59-year-0ld bicyclist was struck by a hit-and-run driver early Monday morning and later died of his injuries, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

An agency spokesperson said the crash occurred around 2 a.m. at Washington Avenue and U.S. Highway 27 near Lake Wales.

The bicyclist was identified as Ramond Johnson of Lake Wales.

"We are always shocked when someone does not stop and render aid after a car crash," explained Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

"We are asking for the public's help in identifying the vehicle of interest in the photo," said Judd.

Polk County Fire Rescue found Johnson on a grassy shoulder of Washington Avenue near the sidewalk.

He was taken to Lake Wales Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

"During the investigation it was learned Ramond Johnson was traveling west on Washington Ave on a bicycle and was struck by an unknown vehicle as he was nearing the north side of roadway," the sheriff's office said. "Mr. Johnson was ejected from his bicycle and landed partially on the sidewalk and grassy shoulder of the roadway."

The surveillance images were captured by a nearby security camera.

"The security images showed a cyclist riding in the roadway and within about one second a vehicle of interest is seen driving in a path of travel that would be consistent with the path of travel of the cyclist prior to impact," the sheriff's office said. "The vehicle appears to be a full-sized sedan of some type."
