WINTER HAVEN, FL — Update: The Polk County Sheriff's Office said the victim hit by a car early Thursday morning has non-life-threatening injuries.

An 18-year-old hit her as he drove to work, according to detectives. He told deputies he did not see her as he drove westbound towards a bus that was stopped.

The original police report sent by the Winter Haven Police Department said the student was riding her bicycle. That is incorrect. The victim was walking to her school bus, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

The Winter Haven High School student was riding a bicycle on Avenue G NW near 22nd Street NW when a car hit her, according to investigators. The incident took place near a bus stop, and she suffered serious injuries.

The driver who hit her did cooperate with police.

As Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies investigate the crash, Avenue G NW and Lake Howard Drive will remain closed. Drivers are asked to take alternate routes, detectives said.

Due to Marsy's Law, the name of the victim will not be released by the Winter Haven Police Department.
