Teacher Loved By Students, Faculty At Lake Shipp Dies Of COVID-19

The family is preparing a memorial service for the school where she taught. Her sister wants her legacy to live on.

WINTER HAVEN, FL —A 41-year-old teacher at Lake Shipp Elementary School died of COVID-19 Monday morning, according to school officials.

Kelly Peterson taught fifth grade at Lake Shipp, the school's website said. Kelly's sister, Christy Peterson, told the Lakeland Ledger she had a weak immune system and her doctors advised her against getting vaccinated. Kelly taught virtually last year.

A gifted teacher at the school, Lorinda Utter, told the outlet she sat in one of the last classes Kelly taught, Aug. 13, before getting sick. She was appreciated by many students, parents and colleagues.

"It was too much for her body to fight," Christy posted on Facebook. "She went peacefully and did not suffer. Now she is with mom and we have another angel to watch over us."

The family is preparing a memorial service that will be open to teachers and students.
