Body Or Bicycle Not Found After Train Possibly Hit Someone: Sheriff

Deputies said that a conductor halted his train Monday morning after he thought it hit a bicyclist at the Fairfield crossing in Lakeland.

LAKELAND, FL — UPDATE: A train conductor thought the train he controlled hit a bicyclist in Lakeland Monday morning, Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies said.

Following a few hours of deputies searching for a body and a bicycle, detectives found nothing, a Polk County Sheriff's Office information officer told Patch.

Deputies said that the train had stopped after he thought that the train had hit someone.

As deputies investigated, the train blocked the crossing at U.S. Highway 92 and Fairway Avenue in Lakeland.

Deputies said that the only thing detectives found was slight damage to the train's engine.

The railroad crossing reopened late Monday morning, deputies said.
