"Carl Stocks betrayed this woman, and he betrayed his oath as a police officer to protect people," explained Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd in announcing the charges Friday. "He systematically controlled the victim by maliciously stalking, threatening and both verbally and physically controlling her for sex."

Brian Bruchey of the Polk County Sheriff's Office told Patch that the case does not involve the Florida Polytechnic University.

"She wasn't from the school. This was somebody he knew," Bruchey said. "None of this took place at the school, had nothing to do with the school."

Arrest documents said Stocks used "force or violence likely to cause serious personal injury" to sexually batter the woman. He "verbally and by written communication, maliciously threatened" her into having sex with him by threatening to publicly share nude photos of her, which he had acquired surreptitiously, according to the documents.

"He physically and mentally forced her into this," Bruchey told Patch. "He actually put his hands on her, slammed her down. She was afraid for her life. She went along with it because she was afraid."

The victim first approached a sheriff's deputy on Wednesday and said that Stocks had been stalking her since 2012.

"The victim produced hundreds of text messages from the past six months that showed Stocks displayed a control and influence over her, and he frequently intimidated, isolated, and humiliated her," according to the sheriff's office.

Stocks also repeatedly harassed and cyberstalked the victim by text messaging.

The sheriff's office said Stocks had been employed by Florida Polytech University for about two years. He resigned from the university after being taken into custody.

He worked at the Nashville Metro Police Department from 1994 to 2011, according to the sheriff's office.
