Wrong-Way Driver Faces Vehicular Homicide Charge: Sheriff

A man who hit a car head-on with his truck in Polk County Sunday threw a liquor bottle out of his truck following the crash, deputies said.

POLK COUNTY, FL — A 39-year-old Frostproof man drove his 2009 Chevrolet Silverado in the wrong direction on State Road 60 Sunday hitting a Volkswagen head-on with his truck, a Polk County Sheriff's Office news release said.

Mark Anthony Poe faces a vehicular homicide charge after deputies said the 27-year-old woman driving her Volkswagen died at the crash location in Lake Wales.

According to authorities, Poe drove his Silverado westbound in the eastbound lanes on SR-60 at 3:20 a.m. when he was accused of smashing his truck head-on with a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta driven by a Lake Wales woman near Stokes Road.

Deputies accused Poe of having bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.

Deputies said an open beer bottle was in the truck and an open bottle of Jack Daniels Fire Whiskey was just outside the truck.

Lanes of SR-60 were closed in both directions for four hours, where the crash occurred for investigations.
