The Pasco County school received a grant to fund a scholarship program for the next two years.

SAINT LEO, FL – Saint Leo University will soon be able to help 16 students to pursue a STEM-based education.

The Pasco County institution received a major grant from the National Science Foundation, which will allow the school to award more than $500,000 in scholarships to help Tampa Bay-area students earn bachelor’s degrees in computer science or mathematics.

The scholarships, known as the SLU Emerging Mathematics and Computer Science Scholars, will range up to $10,000 per year for each student, which can be combined with other sources of financial aid.

The school’s plan is to award scholarships to students who wish to major in computer science and three who wish to major in mathematics starting in the 2017-18 school year. Saint Leo then plans to repeat the process for the 2018-19 school year.

According to the university, the scholarship winners will come together in groups for team-building activities and special academic and career opportunities. For instance, they will have a chance to gain work experience through internship opportunities and hear from guest speakers in industry or research who can discuss career paths.
