Medical Event Blamed for Multi-Car Accident

An accident involving four vehicles Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of State Road 54 and U.S. 41 may have been the result of a driver suffering a medical event, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Joel Ian Cruikshank, 35, of Land O' Lakes was traveling west on State Road 54 in the center lane before veering into the right lane and leaving the roadway, colliding with an electronic crosswalk sign.

Cruikshank's Chevy Tahoe continued westbound, crossing the north and southbound lanes of U.S. 41 before colliding with another vehicle. According to the report, that vehicle collided with a third vehicle, and the Tahoe continued to travel southbound at that point and collided with a fourth vehicle.

Cruikshank possibly suffered a medical event, which led to the crash, therefore no charges were filed, according to the FHP report.

No other injuries were reported. 

The accident tied up eastbound traffic on State Road 54 for a short time yesterday afternoon.
