Motorist Who Hit Bicyclist Gets Additional Charges

A 52-year-old Wesley Chapel man accused of striking a bicyclist with his vehicle and then leading authorities on a brief pursuit is now facing additional charges.

Nathan Wayne Young, of Old Pasco Road, was rearrested Aug. 5 and charged with DUI-Serious Bodily Injury and Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Serious Bodily Injury, according to Sgt. Steve Gaskins of the Florida Highway Patrol.

The latest arrest pertains to a July 29 crash. On that date, Young was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 41 near Painter Place when his 1998 Ford Expedition hit a Huffy bicycle being ridden southbound by 14-year-old Spring Hill resident William J. Machacek, authorities say.

“(Young) fled the scene without rendering aid and was later apprehended by Pasco County Sheriff’s Deputies following a brief pursuit,” according to the initial Florida Highway Patrol report.

William was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital in critical condition while Young was arrested for fleeing and eluding. Young was taken to Land O' Lakes Jail July 29 and later released on $10,000 bond.

Young remained behind bars Wednesday, Aug. 7, on the new charges, both of which carry a $50,000 bond.

Authorities say William continues to recover.
