Pasco Makes School Hurricane Make-Up Day Decision

The Pasco County School district has made a decision regarding a possible shortened Thanksgiving break.

LAND O’ LAKES, FL β€” Pasco County school kids and parents worried that a hurricane make-up day might cut into the Thanksgiving week break can breathe a sigh of relief. The school district announced Monday that no rescheduling is required to make up for lost classroom time.

The school district had to cancel three days of classes since the academic year began courtesy of Hurricanes Hermine and Matthew. The district was confident that it had built enough instructional time into its calendars to avoid make-up days related to Hermine. The story wasn’t quite the same with the day off Hurricane Matthew required.

β€œHowever, the review determined that with some adjustments to schedules, all schools have a sufficient level of instructional seat time to meet statutory requirements, and students will not have to attend school during Thanksgiving break to make up for the October 7 hurricane day,” a Monday statement from the district said.

Should severe weather force the closing of schools again before the Thanksgiving break, the district β€œwill have no choice but to schedule a make-up day on Monday, November 21, 2016,” Superintendent Kurt Browning cautioned.

As it stands right now, kids will have the entire week of Nov. 21 off for the Thanksgiving holiday.
