Pasco Wildfire 70 Percent Contained As Park Closing Continues

Pasco County has announced Starkey Park will remain off limits as work continues to put out a 2,275-acre wildfire.

NEW PORT RICHEY, FL β€” With a 2,275-acre wildfire still burning in the Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, Pasco County officials announced the facility would remain closed through Sunday, May 14 at least. As of Tuesday, the blaze, known as the Anclote Branch fire, was deemed 70 percent contained.

In announcing the park’s extended closing, the county noted that keeping the facility off limits is necessary β€œdue to safety concerns and to provide access for firefighters.” The closing affects all camping, biking and hiking trails.

The Anclote Branch fire broke out over the weekend, spreading quickly from about 120 acres to well over 2,000 thanks to continued dry conditions and winds. As firefighters work to fully extinguish the flames, the county reminds residents who live in the area and commuters that they should β€œexpect periods of heavy smoke on the roads for 30 to 45 days.”

Due to the size of the fire and its location, smoke may be a concern in neighborhoods and along roadways from New Port Richey through Land O’ Lakes. Warning signs have been posted along State Roads 54 and 52, along with the Suncoast Parkway.

As dry conditions continue, Pasco County remains under an active burn ban. Outdoor burning of trash, garbage and yard debris is strictly off limits. Residents are also asked to conserve water as drought conditions continue.

The Salvation Army is continuing to accept donations for firefighters battling the Anclote Branch blaze. Donations may be dropped off at 7745 Ridge Road in Port Richey through Friday, May 12 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Items needed, according to county spokesman Doug Tobin, include water and sports drinks, sunblock, lip balm, bug spray and individually wrapped, non-perishable snack items.

With smoke causing problems in parts of the county, some Pasco County schools are operating on modified schedules. Parents who need the latest information on closings, cancellations and class time changes are asked to visit the Pasco County school district online.
