Whose Name is Earl?

Kevin and Crystal Lane of Land O' Lakes met online in 2002, "before it was cool," he joked.

Both lived in Boston at the time.

Crystal Lane, then 18, found a website called Face the Jury, sort of a hot or not dating site, she said. For fun, she created a profile.

"I would never do something like that nowadays!" she laughed.

Kevin messaged her several times, but she kept saying no, she said.

"He had the dumbest screen name, something with 'AC Slater.'"

But eventually, she broke down and agreed to meet him, and they've been together ever since.

"He was my first boyfriend," she said.

They eventually moved from Boston to North Carolina, then to New Orleans for a few years, working as bartenders. The couple moved to the Bay area in 2005, shortly before Hurricane Katrina hit. They housed a few displaced friends for awhile after, Kevin Lane said.

They've been married for four years now. Their son, Jagger, is a year old.

"I never thought I would get married and move across the country, have a kid and start a business with a guy  I was so mean to at first," Crystal Lane laughed.

So who is Earl? Turns out that's Kevin's middle name.

He was teased about it as a kid.  "If you can't beat it, embrace it," he said.

Everyone back in Boston still calls him Earl. They correct anyone who calls him Kevin, he said.
