Man, 2 Dogs Killed In Pedestrian Crash

A Wednesday night crash along 66th Street North left a 56-year-old Largo man and two dogs dead.

LARGO, FL — The Largo Police Department is investigating a Wednesday night crash that left a man and two dogs dead.

According to the agency, a 2011 Subaru driven by Craig Johnson, 59, was heading north in the median lane of 66th Street North around 9 p.m. March 29 when he struck a pedestrian. Police say the pedestrian, Thomas Lee Mason, was walking his roommate’s dogs outside of a marked crosswalk area near 126th Avenue North at the time.

Mason and both dogs were pronounced dead at the scene, a Thursday morning email from police said.

“Alcohol appears to have been a factor on the pedestrian side,” the email noted. Police say the investigation remains active, but no criminal charges are expected.

The dogs, police said, were 10 and 15 years old. Their breeds have not been released, nor has the owner's name. Tampa Bay Veterinary Clinic on Belcher Road “was gracious enough to take the dogs and will work with the dogs’ owner to follow through with her wishes,” police reported Thursday.

No further information is available at this time.
