Free Pet Adoptions Ahead Of Shelter Renovations: Pinellas County
Free dog adoptions are being offered during the year-long construction project to renovate the Pinellas County animal shelter.
LARGO, FL — Pinellas County is seeking the community's help to make space at the Pinellas County Animals Services shelter at 12450 Ulmerton Road, Largo, by adopting a pet as the shelter undergoes a major renovation to add air-conditioning and strengthen the buildings to withstand a Category 4 hurricane.
During the year-long construction project, the capacity for dogs at the shelter will be reduced by two-thirds.
To help clear the shelter, dog adoptions will be free during construction. Animal Services is also looking for people willing to foster animals.

The project will begin in mid-December and will add air conditioning, improve kennel space for the animals living there and strengthen the buildings to be able to withstand a Category 4 hurricane.
This Penny for Pinellas-funded project is expected to cost $3.5 million.

During the project, the shelter will have a greatly reduced capacity to hold animals, so Animal Services needs the public to help adopt and foster animals throughout the next year.
In addition to being able to adopt dogs for free, adoptees will receive a care package including treats, food samples and toys.
Pinellas Animals Services takes in about 600 pets a month, nearly evenly divided between cats and dogs.
In 2022, animal services took in 6,178 pets including strays and owner surrenders. Of those, 4,810 were adopted.
Adoption hours are Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
